Healthy Kitchens Healthy Lives

Sleep or lack thereof

I am  healthy person with pretty decent habits most of the time. I eat well, drink enough water and exercise daily. What I don’t do well is sleep-never have. I am high-strung and run around on a daily/yearly basis on pure energy which I rarely run out of. This is why, of course, I get so much done. This is also why one day I might not be so healthy.

This past month preparing for the Gala for our non-profit (www.directionfive.org) I have been pushing myself even more than usual. Saturday was the Gala and I went to bed at 3:00 Sunday morning. I still did a lot on Sunday cleaning up. By about 7:00 last night I stopped working. I drank a cup of herb tea, took a bath and climbed in bed at 9:00 p.m. and read until 10:00. Drum roll…..I slept interrupted until 7:00 a.m.! That’s 9 hours! I can’t remember the last time I slept that well or that long.

I don’t have a T.V., so that is not the problem, but I do stay on the computer too late most evenings and it’s almost always work-related. That said, I love my work (don’t like to even call it work most days) but still, you need to know when to stop. I also do not drink caffeine in the afternoons and only a cup or maybe two of something caffeinated, so that’s not it either.

Sleeping so well and feeling rested today has inspired me to make some changes. I will keep up the bath/tea/stop working/no electronics after 7:00 routine. I will also attempt to stop pushing myself so hard during the day as I know that will help as well. This goes against my nature, so it will take more thought to change this part of my life and habits.

I saw a quote the other day that said: “Stop glorifying busy” Struck a chord with me. I am going to try to improve this part of my life.

What about you? Do you sleep well? Do you have tricks to help or are you just naturally able to sleep well?
