Pick Three

I believe that many (if not most) people want to do something to make a positive environmental impact but don’t know where to start or don’t feel that their small changes will have an effect. Or they feel they must do something big (such as No Spending in 2025) but know that they can’t truly commit to it. Here are some ideas for you. Pick one, or two or three items off this list and remember that if everyone did this, it would make a huge impact. Also, don’t forget that setting an example with small changes has a ripple effect on those around you.

Some ideas:

Bath and Beauty:

  • Use shampoo and conditioner bars instead of these items in plastic bottles.
  • You can use coconut oil and other oils instead of lotions –many with ingredients you don’t want on your skin.
  • Use bar soap instead of body wash that comes in plastic bottles.

Food:

The obvious

  • We all know that organically grown food is better for the environment, so do your best to purchase organic food.
  • Eating food that is sourced locally does not require (much) shipping and all that means—fossil fuels, etc. It’s also fresher and more nutritious.

Not as obvious, but so important

  • Reduce or eliminate food waste!! We waste so much food in America—it’s shameful. Reducing food waste makes sense environmentally and is better for your food budget. Read this article I wrote for Thrive Global a few years ago. https://community.thriveglobal.com/reducing-food-waste/

Plastic Reduction:

  • Use glass storage containers. Use parchment paper and aluminum foil (tip: I don’t let food touch aluminum foil. I line with parchment paper) and avoid plastic wrap.

Clothes:

  • The fashion industry produces nearly 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. What can you do to help? Wear natural fibers, avoid synthetic textiles, keep clothing as long as possible, and consider purchasing fewer clothes –Americans buy 60% more clothing than in 2000. That was a short list, but even if you choose one of these items and stick with it, you will make a difference!
