The pinot noir was picked, mostly by hand, about a month ago, but the chardonnay was still on the vines until this week. I have learned a lot of vineyards and wine since I’ve lived next to a vineyard.
This big machine has belts that basically vibrate the grapes off the steps, go down a feeder and into the bin being pulled by a tractor. There are 9 tractors lined up in rows at the end of the day. After the bin is full, the tractor heads to a waiting truck (big rig) and a forklift sets the bin on the bed of the truck. The end of the rows where the machines don’t go are picked by hand. Port-a-potties are moved here and there all day and water is always available for the farm workers as well. This is a well-oiled machine as far as organization goes. It’s been fascinating.
Here are some photos. The fog gave an interesting feeling to the morning which starts before light.
