I have the great pleasure of being co-chair of The Health and Medicine Committee at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco under the guidance our chair, Dr. William Grant. Dr. Russell Jaffe spoke this week about Alkalinity in the body. In my world, Dr. Jaffe is a rock-star. The below are some upcoming programs that you won’t want to miss. Here is the link to the Club so you can look in signing up for programs or becoming a member. www.commonwealthclub.org/

Dr. Dean Ornish:

Recognized by Life magazine as one of the 50 most influential members of his generation, Dr.Ornish undertook pioneering research that was the first to prove that lifestyle changes may stop or even reverse the progression of heart disease, early-stage prostate cancer and even change gene expression by “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer, heart disease and premature aging. Recently, Medicare agreed to provide coverage for his program, the first time that Medicare has covered an integrative medicine program.

Do Cell Phones Cause Brain Cancer?

Devra Davis, Author, Disconnect; School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University

Oncology expert Davis blows the lid off what she asserts is the cell phone industry’s abuse of science. It isn’t just about brain cancer, says Davis: cell phones damage DNA, break down the brain’s defenses, reduce sperm count, and increase memory loss. Radio frequency radiation from phones is especially threatening to children, whose brains are still growing. But the U.S., helped along by the powerful mobile phone industry, has done little to examine these risks or set standards that significantly improve our safety, Davis and others contend. She will reveal the untold inside story of how we got here.

Why We Get Fat – Adiposity 101 and the Alternative Hypothesis of Obesity
A new perspective on weight loss

Gary Taubes, Science Journalist; Author, Good Calories, Bad Calories

Prepare to change everything you thought you knew about weight management. Since the 1950s, the conventional wisdom has held that we get fat because we eat too much and move too little. The problem, according to Taubes, is that doing the opposite – eating less and exercising more – seems to fail to cure the problem. Is our underlying hypothesis incorrect? Taubes argues that we get fat not because we consume more calories than we expend, but because the carbohydrates that we eat happen to be uniquely fattening, and that insulin levels are the real culprit behind obesity. Come hear Taubes’ take on diets and staying healthy.

5 more days!
No Comments Shine The Light On Kids

Hi all:
Well, this Friday, September 17th, is the last day for written surveys to be submitted for Shine The Light On Kids! Please, please have your kids/grandkids/business associates and anyone else you know who has contact with kids ages 6-18 fill them out. It literally takes one minute for kids and their parents/guardians to fill out and then press submit to end them to Sonoma State. The more data, the better we will do developing programs to a wide range of kids and their families.

If you use Facebook or any other social media, please ‘Share’ the surveys with everyone you know. You will find them on the ‘Home’ page on www.pattyjames.com. They are front and center in the right hand column. Kids and parents are great to have, but if you can only get one or the other, that would be good too.

I’ll miss you so much Patch.

My heart is broken. Patch is a memory for me and Wilma. He was always there for me. He protected me and loved me unconditionally. He made sure to get me home safe and he did. I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss him.

Surveys, teaching and photographers for the Gala
No Comments Shine The Light On Kids

Hi all!

Well, we have only 10 days left to make a big final push for written surveys; child and parent. Please, please help as the more data, the better!

By the end of this week, I should have some dates for upcoming classes with kids. These classes are pilot classes, so to speak, based on what the kids have told me they either want to learn or need to learn. As soon as the data is complete by Sonoma State, then we will apply for grants to develop programs with workbooks and lots of visual aids. This is also what the Gala is for-to help pay for all this!

Last Saturday night, the Vine Hill House (where I live) was having a wedding, which they do every weekend, and Jan O’Connell was telling the photographers about Shine The Light On Kids and they volunteered to be the official photographers of our gala next February. There are 3 of them and we’ll have some incredible photos! They are Tibidabo Photography. Please support them as they are supporting us.

If you haven’t watched any kids videos for a while, you should. They are so great. Little Julie, who is six years old, when asked if she was worried about the safety of the food and water she’s drinking, looked thoughtfully and said, “You shouldn’t drink bath water or lake water or pond water.” Don’t you love it?

More soon!

Day 3 and ENews coming soon
No Comments Patty James Health Blog

Hello all:

I haven’t sent my monthly ENews since June as we were redesigning the web site. So now, it’s live and although we are still working through some changes, ENews will go out either this week or early next week. If you want my (generally) once a month posts, please just ‘subscribe’; it’s on the Home page and have your friends do the same.

Here is the menu from yesterday, which as Day 3:

Breakfast: 2 cups zucchini, 2 fried eggs in 1 Tablespoon olive oil, 1/4 cup salsa -349 calories total
Lunch: 4 olives (did you know that 4 olives are 68 calories!) 1 apple, 1 carrot, 1 stalk celery-157 calories total
Dinner: 1 Cajun sausage (purchased at the Farmer’s Market from a local ranch) 1 red pepper, 1/2 cup onion, 4 cloves garlic-461 total calories
Drinks: Tea, Tizane Hibiscus tea, beer -233 calories total

Exercise: 10 mile bike ride, dancing/walking/jogging through the vineyard for an hour

I’m feeling good, by the way. My calorie count being less than 1,500 calories per day, is a bit low for someone who exercises like I do, but with all the filling veggies, and enough protein, it seems to be working for me. This may not for you, by the way. We are all different.

Have a great week!
